One of the chief activities of our Auxiliary is to encourage the distribution of God's Word and TBS literature to local schools, prisons, nursing homes, doctors' surgeries, military establishments and other public places.
With the Lord's help, the Wessex Auxiliary will cooperate closely with the Society's headquarters; and, through local knowledge, will provide practical assistance in the distribution of God's Word. In order to further this objective, we encourage local churches and assemblies to work alongside the Auxiliary, seeking opportunities to circulate the Word of God in their immediate locality.
The Wessex Auxiliary held its inaugural meeting in January 2010 and hopes to build on the work carried out over so many years by the Wiltshire and West Auxiliary. The Wessex Auxiliary was set up to oversee the growth of the important work of furthering local interest in the work of the Society as a whole, as well as of fulfilling the Society's primary purpose in seeking opportunities to circulate copies of the Word of God in the region. For the purposes of the Auxiliary, Wessex covers Wiltshire and the neighbouring counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Berkshire and Oxfordshire.
As an Auxiliary, we would like to ask any believers who are members of a local church or assembly in the Wessex area prayerfully to consider making the following commitments to spread the Word of God and advance the aims of the Society.
- Do you desire the Word of God to be instrumental in bringing light and life, through the Gospel of Christ, to those around you who are lost in sin and in the darkness of false religion and unbelief?
- Are you aware of, or would you be willing to actively seek, opportunities to spread the Word of God in your immediate church locality?
- Would you consider becoming a representative to the Auxiliary on behalf of your church, or to bring the work of the Auxiliary and of the Society before the Lord in prayer?
The Auxiliary could help you by providing practical advice on how best to approach organisations with a view to placing accurate copies of the Word of God into the hands of lost souls.

- To work with and promote interest amongst local churches in furthering this work.
- To seek opportunities and to facilitate practically the distribution of the Word of God in local schools, prisons, nursing homes, military establishments and other places as opportunities arise.
- To arrange prayer meetings to bring before our gracious God the work of the Society as a whole and the interests of the Auxiliary in the region.
- To promote membership of the Society in the region.

Despite society at large becoming more and more secular, and despite the increasing marginalisation of Christians and the continuous drive of government to bring in laws that are utterly opposed to the Word of God, we have once again seen the Lord’s wonder-working hand in the Wessex region, opening doors in new and unforeseen ways, and there have been many encouragements.
When we met for the annual Wessex Prayer Meeting at Chippenham in June 2014, some words were quoted in prayer that have been an encouragement through the remainder of the year. They are from 2 Corinthians 4.8-9.
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed…
In the early part of the year, we were very encouraged to see the beginning of distribution of Scriptures into care homes. Within the Wessex region alone there are 2,540 care homes. This is a vast sector, and it has been our experience that the Lord has opened doors when we have approached individual homes local to where we live, either by calling in person or phoning to speak with the manager. We would encourage our supporters to contact homes in their local areas in the same way. Every year we find that some doors are closed to us but others are open. In this the Lord is sovereign, and we have proved many times that His ways are not our ways, neither are His thoughts our thoughts (Isaiah 55.8).
In the spring we were approached by a church in Surrey to assist with supplying copies of the Scriptures for distribution in that town over the May Bank Holiday weekend. We are thankful to say that 100 copies of the Word of God were distributed to passers-by. Later in the year we were approached by another church to assist in supplying 300 Bibles, once again for distribution on the street to passing shoppers. This we were able to do, and there were encouraging reports of many Bibles being taken.
Many of you will know that we have had a number of requests from prisons over the past few years, including one near Bicester. This is a large category B prison, with a fairly transitory population, as many individuals serving time go there for the first couple of weeks of their sentence, prior to being sent on to the prison where they will serve the majority of their time. There is always a high demand for Bibles at this particular prison, as prisoners often take the Bible on with them to their next location. We had a request from the chaplain that we supply 1,000 Bibles. However, at the time we had insufficient funds to supply this amount, so we were only able to provide just over 400. One of the churches within the Wessex region kindly agreed to provide funds to make up the shortfall for this cause. We have since had a further request for more Bibles.
Over the late spring and summer we were able to display posters on trains and buses within the region. On the buses these took the form of large texts down bus sides and on bus rears, in clear view of passing pedestrians and other vehicles. There were four texts displayed on buses operating out of Salisbury. These were:
Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. - Isaiah 45.22
God also hath highly exalted him…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow - Philippians 2.9,10
Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. - Luke 11.28
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved - Acts 16.31
At the bottom of each text poster was the email address and telephone number of the Auxiliary, and the option to request a free Bible. We are very thankful to say that we had three requests for Bibles. Two people emailed us, and the other rang us from the passenger seat of her friend’s car to say that she was following a bus displaying one of the texts, saw the offer of a free Bible, and phoned us straight away.
With regard to train poster texts, we were able to place these on five train stations during the summer: at Chippenham, Taunton, Bristol Temple Meads, Bristol Parkway and Brockenhurst. The verses were:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3.16
Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord - Proverbs 16.5
Neither their silver not their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath… - Zephaniah 1.18
Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity…? - Micah 7.18
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - 1 Timothy 1.15
We would give thanks for these wonderful opportunities to have the Word of God displayed in public places. Thousands and thousands of travellers and others going about their daily lives will have seen these passages from the Scriptures, many reading the Scriptures perhaps for the first time.
As the school year ended in the summer, we were pleased to distribute 79 Bibles to leavers at schools in the Trowbridge area, where a relationship has been established now for several years. We are always delighted to supply Bibles into schools, and it is our prayer that the Lord would open more doors across the Wessex region.
As we approached the end of the year, once again we had requests for further Bibles from prisons, notably one in Bristol, who requested 540, including Scriptures in Polish, Romanian and Lithuanian. A member of the Committee spoke to the chaplain at this prison who interestingly is also the local imam. He was very receptive to taking further Bibles into the prison, and asked if the version was the King James.
We have also had requests from two other prisons at the same time, with another 70 for Bullingdon and a further 50 for a prison for women near Gloucester.
Latterly we have also been able to access free advertising space in local supermarkets, offering a free Bible to those who would like one. Our advertising card has the contact details of the Auxiliary on it. Additionally, we have a card template that can be emailed to any supporter who feels that this is something they might be able to do in their local area.
We are thankful to say that over the course of 2014 we have been able, with the Lord’s help, to send out 903 Bibles to the spiritually needy people in the Wessex area. The 660 Bibles requested just before the end of the year have given us a welcome start to 2015, as these quantities were shipped early in the New Year.
What an encouragement these things are! Despite the many changes we see going on around us every day, and the continuous downgrade of all things, we are reminded that our God has not changed; indeed He is unchangeable, and we would give Him all the glory alone.
We read in the Word of God:
before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. - Isaiah 43.10
I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. - Isaiah 43.11
Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it? - Isaiah 43.13
…whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. - Micah 5.2
For I am the LORD, I change not - Malachi 3.6
May we each be encouraged to continue in the year to come with this mighty privilege and responsibility of the distribution of the Word of God, as the Lord may be pleased to help us.
