How Should We Translate Scripture?

Formal equivalence means that a translation follows as closely as possible the form of the original languages of Scripture, even to imitating the grammar and syntax of those languages, provided only that no serious and genuinely objectionable distortion
of the receptor language results. The principle is often expressed by the statement: ‘as literal as is possible and only as free as is necessary’.

The Practical Fruit of Divine Inspiration

This blessed truth of inspiration not only assures us that ‘Every word of God is pure’ (Proverbs 30.5), but also that being God’s Word it will have a profound effect in the hearts and lives of those to whom it comes with power. Indeed, inspiration is
spoken of by Peter as ‘holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost’ (2 Peter 1.21) and ‘the Spirit of Christ which was in them’ (1 Peter 1.11). This being so, the ultimate aim of Divine inspiration is to bring sinners to repentance,
and that it is the ‘Spirit of Christ’ which is in them governing the renewed man in the way of faith.

‘Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever’ (Psalm 119.160).

The Lord has invested His inscripturated Word to us with the same unalterable truth and power. God’s Word is His word whether spoken or written. From the first word of the Bible until the last it is all true. The Scriptures are written for the purpose
of imparting salvation through His Name. Inasmuch as a selection has been made known to us in His Word, we have all that we need to know about the way of salvation. We need nothing else, except the Spirit to direct our thoughts concerning it. The
Holy Scriptures bear the same powerful Word of God, tailored in His Divine wisdom for our benefit.

Who was William Tyndale? What did the Lord call him to do? In 1526 it was the Lord’s appointed time to give English speakers His Word in their own language, translated directly from the original Biblical languages by Tyndale. Today, over 500 years later,
we remember who Tyndale was and the great legacy he left us in the Authorised (King James) Version.

The 2026 annual children’s quizzes are based on our new article: The Fugitive Translator: William Tyndale’s Dangerous Work. The quizzes are aimed at young people ages 7 to 11 (junior) and 12 to 16 (senior). Once completed children can return the quizzes to their local TBS Branch and receive a Scripture
prize or they may choose to grant Scriptures to a child in need.

In Luke 3.36 Cainan appears as the father of Sala and the son of Arphaxad. This has been alleged to contradict the Old Testament genealogies of the ‘generations of Shem’ recorded in Genesis 10.24 and 11.12, and in 1 Chronicles 1.18 where Salah (or Shelah,
in Chronicles) appears as the son of Arphaxad with no intervening Cainan. This article examines and explains this apparent discrepancy.

Monogenes: 'only begotten' or 'one of a kind'?

traditionally rendered ‘only begotten’ in the Authorised (King James) Version but increasingly translated as ‘one of a kind’ or ‘unique’ in modern versions. Through careful analysis of the word’s etymology and usage in the New Testament, it is concluded
that the concept of ‘begetting’ properly belongs to monogenes. As demonstrated, the evidence shows that ‘only begotten’ better fits every Scriptural context where the word appears. The retention of ‘only begotten’ in the Authorised Version is shown
to preserve the historic and Scriptural doctrine of the Trinity, specifically that the Son is of the same substance (homoousios) as the Father.

Our Responsibility for Scripture-less People Groups

It has been estimated that 1,268 languages spoken by around 100 million have no Scripture in any form and have no translation project in sight. While English speakers enjoy an abundance of Bible translations, these Scripture-less communities cannot read God’s Word in their heart language, hindering their spiritual growth and the church’s witness. The Trinitarian Bible Society has a long history of first-time Bible translation projects and currently supports translation work in at least twelve Scripture-less languages. Revelation 7.9 reminds us that the great multitude before the Lamb will come from ‘all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues’, giving us both motivation and responsibility to ensure that Scripture-less people groups receive the Word of God in their own language.

Verses with Zero-Support

This article addresses a flaw in modern Bible translations that rely on the Critical Text. Dr Maurice A. Robinson has demonstrated that the Nestle-Aland text contains at least 105 verses which have ‘zero-support’ overall in any extant manuscripts of the Greek New Testament, ancient versions, or early church writings. These verses have been pieced together by editors working with isolated word variations in the ‘laboratory’ of textual criticism, producing a ‘test-tube text’ not supported by manuscripts. By contrast, the traditional Received Text used by the Reformers and the Authorised (King James) Version shows a clear and consistent line of preservation through the centuries, with manuscripts in remarkable agreement.

Believers can have confidence that God has faithfully preserved His Word, and that the traditional Received Text represents the Scriptures as they have been known and trusted by the church from the apostolic age to our own day.

Technical theological terms like ‘propitiation’, ‘justification’, and ‘righteousness’ are essential for accurate understanding and should not be simplified or removed by modern translators seeking readability. The article explores the group of Greek words
that have been faithfully translated into the English word propitiation, and contends that modern Bible versions often sacrifice theological precision by eliminating or redefining these specialised terms, resulting in translations that fail to convey
the original meanings of biblical words.

Mark 16.9–20 is the authentic and divinely preserved ending of Mark’s Gospel. It is supported by overwhelming manuscript evidence, early translations, consistent quotation by early church fathers, and strong stylistic, thematic, and structural continuity
with the rest of Mark and the other three Gospels. Modern doubts rest largely on two problematic manuscripts and modern critical assumptions, whereas the historic church rightly received these verses as inspired Scripture.

Faithful Scripture work is guided by the availability of qualified men, and the Society holds the view that the Authorised (King James) Version does not need textual revision as it already closely reflects the Hebrew Masoretic and Greek Received Texts.
Attempts to update or lightly revise the AV face serious difficulties, including differing forms of English, limited suitable scholars, textual concerns, and the risk of creating further division among believers and churches.

It is sometimes suggested that the words in verse 24, ‘This is my body, which is broken for you’, are at variance with John 19.36 ‘These things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken’; and Exodus 12.46 with
reference to the Passover Lamb—‘neither shall ye break a bone thereof’; Numbers 9.12 ‘nor break any bone of it’; Psalm 34.20 ‘He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken’.

The Pool of Bethesda

‘Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an
angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had’ (John 5.2–4).

Most of the modern versions either omit or place in brackets the last few words of verse 3 and the whole of verse 4, and it is often asserted that these words are of doubtful authority or that they are spurious. However, the evidence makes it quite clear
that in the majority of the copies and versions over a wide area retained the disputed words as an authentic part of the inspired text.

Why ‘Jehovah’ Not ‘Yahweh’ Is the Most Accurate Pronunciation of the Divine Name

The name Jehovah is not a linguistic accident or a mistaken tradition. It is rooted in a rich and consistent manuscript tradition, including thousands of ancient Hebrew texts where the full Divine Name appears with vowel markings. These manuscripts demonstrate
that Jehovah was intended to be read and pronounced, not merely substituted with Adonai. Linguistically, Jehovah aligns with the Hebrew verb for ‘to be’, echoing God’s self-revealed name in Exodus 3.14 and reinforcing His eternal nature as ‘He who
    was, is, and shall be’.

A Brief History of the Hebrew Bible

The story of God's providential preservation of His Word as is found in the Old Testament has a long, distinguished and intricate history. Some 15 centuries before the birth of Christ, God raised up the prophet Moses to begin His great work of written communication with man. Thus began the writing of the Old Testament, a work which would continue for 11 centuries and would constitute the basis for the growth and development of Christianity.

The Greek text upon which a translation is based will have an impact upon both a Christian’s reading of Scripture devotionally and the proclaiming of the Word of God in bearing witness to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. It is necessary that today’s
Christian understands the importance of the traditional Greek text in his Christian life.
