Chichewa (Malawi)

In 2015 the Society entered into an agreement with the Free Grace Evangelistic Association (FGEA) to prepare an interim Chichewa New Testament.

This Bible project is a major revision of an existing Chichewa New Testament. Although the revision work is based mainly on the English Authorised (King James) Version, reference is also being made to the Greek Received Text. This project is progressing well—indeed the entire New Testament has now been prepared in first draft format, with Matthew to 2 Corinthians at the second-level checking stage.

God willing, this interim project will eventually be a stepping stone to preparing a new translation of the Chichewa Bible translated directly from the Hebrew Masoretic and Greek Received Texts, which we hope will be carried out in partnership with our sister society, the Gereformeerde Bijbelstichting (GBS). With the Lord's help, we have identified two native Chichewa speakers with knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Greek whom we trust will be able to help us on this longer-term translation endeavour.

Please pray that work on the interim Chichewa New Testament continues to progress, and that the Lord enables the new translation eventually to go ahead.
