Amharic Bible

The Society’s Amharic Bible project is a new translation with reference to the best Biblical Texts: the Greek Received Text of the New Testament and the Masoretic Hebrew Text of the Old Testament. Amharic is primarily spoken in Ethiopia, and our translator is a native speaker. He also uses dictionaries, Bible software and other helps to strive for the best possible translation in modern literary Amharic.
We rejoiced when our translator completed the first draft of the entire New Testament in January this year. However, within a few weeks of completing this draft, our translator, his wife and some family members were involved in a serious road traffic accident. The family members were largely unhurt, but our translator and his wife sustained injuries which required hospitalisation and surgery. We are thankful that both are now on the mend and that our translator has been able to resume his review of the draft New Testament, carefully checking it against the Greek text and making any necessary refinements.
We are humbly thankful to God for sparing the life of our translator and his family. This accident reminds us all that we need constantly to pray for the Lord to watch over us and all those with whom we work. Proverbs 21.31 reminds us that ‘safety is of the LORD’. We would request prayer for the full recovery of our Amharic Bible translator and his wife following their accident. Our translator has also requested that prayer is made for the provision of committed Christian Amharic proofreaders to help review the draft New Testament.
