Bulgarian Project

22 December 2020

The Republic of Bulgaria is in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. The capital and largest city is Sofia; other major cities are Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas. The official language of the country is Bulgarian.

Work began in 2014 to revise the first Bulgarian Protestant Bible, widely known as the ‘Constantinople’ or ‘Slaveikov’ Bible, first published in Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1871. In 2018, 5,000 copies of the revised Bulgarian Gospel according to John were printed, and these continue to be distributed.

Over the past eighteen months in the Lord’s providence, our reviser has suffered increasingly poor health and is now extremely unwell. This has significantly slowed progress on the revision, although he has nearly completed the Gospel according to Mark. Please pray that, in the Lord’s mercies, he would be given grace in this time of suffering. Please also pray that a suitably qualified native Bulgarian speaker would be found to carry on the work.

‘The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion’ (Psalm 20.1–2).
