TBS Amharic Bible Project
07 April 2022
The Society’s Amharic Bible project is a new translation with reference to the best Biblical Texts: the Greek Received Text of the New Testament and the Masoretic Hebrew Text of the Old Testament. Amharic is primarily spoken in Ethiopia, and our translator is a native speaker. We rejoice that the Amharic New Testament and Psalms is now being printed, and we hope an initial print run of 10,000 copies will be completed soon. An additional 5,000 copies are also due to be printed by Bearing Precious Seed (BPS), Milford, Ohio. The 10,000 copies printed in Europe will be shipped to Ethiopia, where several launch thanksgiving services in strategic cities are planned. The Society is also exploring the possibility of having a more formal presence in Ethiopia to aid distribution, given the great need for our faithful edition of the Amharic Scriptures to be widely distributed. Following the forthcoming production and distribution of the New Testament and Psalms, God willing, our translator plans to resume the Old Testament translation work, starting with Genesis. In recent months he has also translated several TBS articles into Amharic which are available to view here. We are thankful for the financial support from TBS (Canada) for this project, and for the funds raised by firstBible International for printing the New Testament and Psalms. ‘Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God’ (Psalm 68.31).
