New! Telugu

06 March 2023

Telugu is a Dravidian language spoken by people predominantly living in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and the Yanam district of the city of Puducherry, India, where it is also the official language. Along with Hindi and Bengali it is one of the few languages with primary official language status in more than one Indian state. It is fourth among the languages with the highest number of native speakers in India, with nearly 82 million speakers according to the 2011 census.

The Society published a Telegu New Testament in 1983 but by the early 1990s we had stopped publishing it and were told that it had problems such as omissions. Some revision work was undertaken in the late 1990s and 2000s but it transpired that there were issues with this work. Recently, however, approval was given for a pilot project to translate the Gospel according to John and the draft text is at an advanced stage.
