Kannada Revision Project

24 April 2023

Kannada, formerly known as Canarese, is one of the Dravidian languages spoken in the south of India, north-east Sri Lanka, and parts of Pakistan. Approximately 44 million speakers speak Kannada and an additional 15 million speak it as a second language. The majority of Kannada speakers are in the Indian state of Karnataka where approximately two-thirds of the population speak it (about 40 million people). It is written using its own script and is largely phonetic.

In 1987 the Society published its first Kannada Bible, a translation from the Authorised Version; it was then reprinted in 1991. In 2021 the Society commenced a revision to bring the Bible up to the Society’s present textual and translational standards. The revision is progressing, and we hope, Lord willing, that the draft of the Gospel according to John can be reviewed before long.

Please pray for this project and the many other revision and translation projects the Society is undertaking. ‘And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.’ (Isaiah 65.24)
