Violence in Manipur
22 May 2023
Some of you will have seen in the news media that in early May violence erupted in the northeast Indian state of Manipur. Acts of ethnic violence have been severe, with churches and homes burned down, and reports of people being beaten and killed. At the time of writing, the internet in Manipur has been shut down for more than one week and we have been unable to contact most of our Bible translators living there. Thankfully there have been reports from others within the state that they have been kept safe thus far. We pray that the Lord would preserve our translators, their families, and their churches and that peace would be restored to this region. These events are all the more poignant given the recent thanksgiving services for the publication of both the Thadou Bible and the Simte Bible. At that point, there were no obvious signs of the tensions that have engulfed the state recently.
