Ukrainian Scriptures

12 June 2023

Ukrainian is an East Slavic language of the Indo‐European language family. It is the native language of about 40 million people and the official state language of Ukraine. Written Ukrainian uses the Ukrainian alphabet, a variant of the Cyrillic script.

The Society continues to publish the Kulish version of the Ukrainian Bible, and further printings of the whole Bible continue to be made. This text is also being made available in a new print setting of the New Testament and Psalms. However, the Society recognises that the Kulish edition is in an old western dialect of Ukrainian, which is challenging for many of today’s Ukrainians to read. Thus, we are pleased to advise that in recent months the General Committee approved the Popchenko New Testament text for publication. The Popchenko edition is in current literary Ukrainian and thus accessible to all Ukrainian readers. Once a publication and distribution agreement has been reached with Mr Popchenko, we will publish his New Testament text. In the meantime, he continues to translate the Old Testament, with the Psalms prepared in first draft. In the Lord’s often mysterious providence, the sad and devastating war in Ukraine has led to many Ukrainians desiring to read God’s Word and being moved to hear the Gospel.
