New Translation! Kabyle (Algeria)

20 June 2023

Kabyle is a Berber language predominantly spoken in Kabylia, a region in north-east Algeria, and in the capital Algiers. Estimates of the number of Kabyle speakers globally are around seven to eight million, most of whom are in Algeria. Kabyle borrows significantly from French but mostly from Arabic, which as in other languages can present challenges for Bible translation.

There is significant persecution for Christians in Algeria, and movements for Kabyle autonomy have attracted additional repression. From the 1920s onwards the Society published a significant amount of Kabyle Scriptures, with various gospels printed during the 1950s and up to 1967. Previous investigations have indicated the need for an accurate translation and replacement of Arabic words.

In March of this year we were able to commence a pilot project on the Gospel according to John. The translator hopes to finish the first draft of the gospel in the coming months after which it will need to be reviewed.
