British Sign Language

27 June 2023

British Sign Language (BSL) has been officially recognised as a language since March 2002 and has its own grammar and syntax, as well as vocabulary that includes the expression of vital and complex Biblical truths. There are around 87,000 people who use BSL as their preferred language (where English may be a second or third language) and currently there are around 151,000 individuals in the UK who can use BSL (not including translators and interpreters).

In 2020 the General Committee agreed to commence a pilot project in BSL, where the signing would be placed in video above the English Authorised (King James) Version on the Society’s online Bible.

The main signer is currently studying for his BSL Level 6 course, which is the top BSL qualification; this is good for the project but has slowed down progress due to the time the studies take. The BSL team have also had to relocate the place where the signing is filmed, and some further improvements are needed. However, we have been sent an updated edition of John 1 fully signed for us to review.

Please remember this project in your prayers, particularly as the project leader is experiencing significant health issues.
