Guéré—A Language Spoken in Ivory Coast

22 August 2023

Guéré, also called Wè, is a Western Kru language spoken by over 400,000 people in the Ivory Coast primarily in the regions of Dix-Huit Montagnes and Moyen-Cavally. There are also Guéré dialects spoken in Liberia and literacy rates range between 25% and 40%. Christianity makes up only 15% of Guéré speakers, the remaining 60% hold to ethnic religions and 25% are Muslim.

During the past year TBS sought to identify speakers of Guéré who could help us assess how far a New Testament published by TBS in 1982 may meet our current standards and principles. This has not been successful thus far and we would be pleased to hear from anyone who could connect us with those who could help with this evaluation.

‘Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever’ (Psalm 119.152).
