Boro Translation (India)

03 October 2023

Boro, also known as Bodo, is one of the Society’s many new translation projects. As this is a new translation, we ask that you pray for the translators and that their translation will be faithful to the Biblical languages and received by those who speak the language.

Quick Facts:

  • Boro is a Sino‐Tibetan language spoken primarily by the Boro people of Northeast India and Nepal.
  • It is the official language of the Bodoland autonomous region (located in India).
  • Approximately 1.4 million people speak Boro, primarily in the Bodoland.
  • The Gospel according to John has been submitted for publication.

The current Boro Bible was published in the 1960s in the now unused Latin script and is not based on the Received Text. Since 1975 the language has been written using the Devanagari script. In December 2022, the Society approved the commencement of a pilot Boro Bible translation project with a team of translators based in Assam. The Gospel according to John has undergone the Society’s rigorous checking against the Received Text and is now being prepared for typesetting and publication. Lord willing, we hope that it will be published in 2024. The Boro team has also prepared some other portions of the New Testament in first draft.

'Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen' (Psalm 72.18-19).
