Thou Shalt Not Kill

In Exodus 20.13 the Authorised (King James) Version used the word ‘kill’ whereas many modern translations have opted to use the word ‘murder’. Are both an acceptable translation of the Hebrew word ratsach? Do these two words mean the same thing? The translation of a word has at times given a wrong impression or brought people to a false conclusion. This article takes a closer look at the impact of translating ratsach as either ‘kill’ or ‘murder’ and takes into account how the word is translated in various parts of the Old and New Testaments.
