Hmar Bible Translation Project

03 April 2024

We have several Bible translation projects in Manipur, India and surrounding states. The projects are in various stages, from first drafts of translations to typesetting and printing. One of the newer projects, Hmar, has progressed well.

Hmar is spoken by the Hmar people, who are scattered across the far northeast of India in the states of Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Hmar speakers number around 100,000.

The Hmar Bible translation project began in 2021. The team has already prepared the text of the four Gospels, Acts, and Romans with John being approved by the General Committee so that the project is now set to work towards the publication of the whole New Testament. The team are making excellent progress through the Pauline epistles in their first draft of the New Testament. God willing, the first publication will be the New Testament in a few years’ time.

‘Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you’ (2 Thessalonians 3.1).
