Lisu Bible Revision Project

30 April 2024

TBS 1980 Lisu Bible

The Lisu are a Sino-Tibetan group of 1,320,000 people predominantly found in China, Myanmar, Thailand, and India. Traditionally, the Lisu have followed animistic and shamanistic traditions, venerating ancestral spirits and nature. However, in the early 20th century, Christianity began to spread among the Lisu, particularly by missionaries from Protestant denominations. Today the Lisu are generally known to be a Christian people group.

Portions of Lisu Scriptures began to be published in the 1920s and in 1968 the first complete Lisu Bible was published. TBS published a Lisu Bible in 1980 and light revisions were made in the later part of that decade.

The Lisu Bible is written using the Fraser alphabet, which was created by a Myanmar pastor, and then improved by British missionary James Fraser in 1915. The alphabet uses uppercase Latin letters that are sometimes rotated.

We have mentioned the Lisu project in annual reports, asking for prayer that a native Lisu speaker and proofreader could be found. We rejoice that one has been found and ask that you continue to pray for this project to move forward.

Currently, we are working on adding this Bible to our editorial system and hope that in due course, after it has been checked by the Lisu proofreader and necessary corrections are made, to add it to our online Bible.
