Initially, our translator laboured to prepare a completely new translation of the Gospel according to John directly from the underlying Greek Received Text, with secondary reference to extant Tamil Bibles and the Authorised (King James) Version. Despite these efforts, this was not well received as Tamil Christians have a deep attachment to the old Tamil Version. This being the case, the project now being undertaken is a relatively light revision of the old Tamil Version to ensure closer conformance to the Received Text and to update archaic vocabulary, syntax, and grammar.

The initial translation of the gospels has been completed, John is under review, and work has begun on the book of Acts. Recently, the revised text of the Gospel according to John was issued to about a dozen Tamil contacts for review and feedback, but we would welcome additional native Tamil speakers to act as volunteer reviewers.

How to pray for this project:

• For the translator as he endeavours to faithfully revise the Tamil Scriptures, particularly as he begins his work on the book of Acts.
• For the Christian Tamil people to be receptive to the new revision, and that it would bring many Tamil speakers to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
• For additional Tamil speakers to review the revision.
