Mongolian Bible Translation Project

29 October 2024

Mongolia is situated in the northern part of Asia, landlocked between Russia to the north and China to the south. It is home to about 3 million people, approximately 40% of whom live in its capital of Ulaanbaatar. Mongolian is the official language; it can be written in Cyrillic and the traditional (old) Mongolian script. Our translation is in the Cyrillic script.

Since 2009 the Society has partnered with Dr Charles Keen (assisted by other American Independent Baptists) to prepare a new edition of the Mongolian Bible translated directly from the Greek Received and Hebrew Masoretic Texts. The first edition of the New Testament was published in 2017 but is being lightly revised to improve some of the phrasing. Work has progressed well on the Old Testament with almost 80% being translated in first draft and around 15% finalised. A recent visit from the team leader has helped with progressing the Old Testament work. Lord willing, the translation will be completed in 2026.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Great Company of Publishers for the Old Testament portion of this project. The Society funds the revision work on the New Testament which is ongoing.

How to pray for this project:

  • For the translation of the Old Testament and the revision of the New Testament to proceed with care and diligence.
  • For the work to be completed in a timely manner and no hindrances to the work would arise.
  • For the translation to be used by God for the conversion of many Mongolians.
