Chichewa Bible Translation Project

26 November 2024

Chichewa is a Bantu language spoken in southeastern Africa, primarily in Malawi but also in parts of Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. There are an estimated 14.4 million Chichewa speakers.

Earlier this year we were very pleased to receive the Chichewa Old Testament files. These have passed through extensive review, analysis, and proofreading. All the files have been typeset and the Bible is now undergoing its final proofreading by the team. Lord willing, we look forward to having the Chichewa Bible published in 2025.

The Chichewa New Testament has been very well received. Alongside distribution via TBS contacts in Malawi and the extensive Free Grace Evangelistic Association network in Malawi and Zambia, our friends at Bearing Precious Seed have also been able to print and distribute tens of thousands of copies through their contacts in Malawi. The same distribution avenues are envisaged for the Chichewa Bible.

How to pray for this project:

  • For the translators and proofreaders to undertake the final proofreading tasks with careful diligence and accuracy, and that any errors or mistakes would be found and corrected.
  • For the publication of the Bible (which includes both print and digital) to proceed smoothly and without hindrances.
  • For the Bible to be distributed widely to Chichewa speakers throughout southeastern Africa.
