Pokot Bible Translation Project

10 December 2024

Pokot is a tribal language spoken by about 900,000 people in northern Kenya. While many Pokot speakers are bilingual, Pokot is used in churches; they desire the Scriptures in their own heart language.

In 2014, TBS commenced a new edition of the Pokot New Testament. The work has been slow going, but in recent months the addition of new team members has sped up the work. It was a pleasure to meet with the main translator in person recently. Please continue to pray for the team as they diligently prepare a new translation of the Scriptures for the Pokot people.

The Gospel according to John was published in 2021 and feedback thus far has been very positive. We are pleased the work on the New Testament is progressing well; we have received files for Matthew to 2 Corinthians. Lord willing, the New Testament will be drafted by February 2025 after which it will be reviewed—this is expected to take about six months.

How to pray for the project:

  • For the continued health of the main translator who is quite elderly.
  • For the translation team as they continue their translating and proofreading work.
  • For the distribution of the printed copies of the Gospel according to John.
