TBS Bible Translation Projects in North India

A deep study of Indian languages reveals the connections among them. In recent years, we have found that a reliable Hindi Bible translation paves the way to translation projects in many related languages. Using technology and a standardised format allows translations in many cognate languages to be drafted alongside the Hindi. These draft translations then require the attention of native proofreaders and editors to verify, adjust, and modify when needed.

We currently have over 50 projects in the Indian subcontinent. Below are the languages that are found just in the northern part of India, some of which are part of the Hindi project. To view all our projects in India, visit tbsbibles.org/translations-hub.

  • Awadhi: The Gospel of John has been drafted.
  • Bhojpuri: The Gospel of John in the northern dialect is being published; work continues on the southern dialect.
  • Hindi: The Gospel of John is being distributed; work proceeds on the New Testament.
  • Magahi: A draft of the Gospel of John is being reviewed.
  • Maithili: The Gospel of John is being distributed, and a draft copy of the Gospel of John in Standard Maithili is being reviewed.
  • Kashmiri: The Gospel of John is being reviewed.
  • Punjabi, Eastern: The Gospel of John is being reviewed.

Hundreds of millions speak these languages, and an accurate and faithful translation of the Bible is greatly needed. Please remember these projects in your prayers.

‘Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest’ (Luke 10.2).
