Slovak Translation Project

Slovak is a phonemic West Slavic language spoken by about 7.4 million people; approximately five million speak it in Slovakia, one million in the USA, and the remainder in its wider diaspora. It is closely related to Czech and Polish, borrowing words from those languages along with Hungarian, German, Italian, Russian, and Latin. It uses the Latin alphabet with diacritical markings and includes words where consonants such as ‘r’ and ‘l’ act as syllabic vowels.

During the Protestant Reformation, many people in the area of present-day Slovakia became Protestant; however, the seventeenth century Counter-Reformation restored the Roman Catholic Church’s strong hold. Today, sixty per cent of Slovaks identify as Roman Catholic and less than two per cent as evangelical.

The Slovak Bible translation project commenced in 2020, and the first fruits of it was the publication of the Gospel according to John and Paul’s Epistle to the Romans in 2024. It was published in both print and on our Online Bible App. While the adoption of the publication has been slow, we anticipate that like-minded individuals, churches, and missionary organisations will assist us in distributing our Slovak text. The lead translator continues his work on translating the synoptic Gospels.
