Translating the Written Word of God

God carefully chose every word to convey precisely what He wanted and how He wanted to teach us. ‘The word of God written’ reminds us of the Saviour’s repeated defence to the evil one: ‘It is written’ (Matthew 4.4, 7, 10). What had been originally written through inspiration remained written as the fully inspired Word of the living God. Our Lord appeals to this abiding source of Divine authority and says, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God’ (Matthew 4.4). Every word has Divine authority. The word ‘Scripture’ literally means ‘the writing.’ As the Puritan John Owen says, it is ‘the writing, or word written’ which ‘is by inspiration from God.’
